Tetrate Global Load Balancer

Tetrate Global Load Balancer is a high-availability solution for Tetrate Gateways deployed by Tetrate Service Bridge. It coordinates updates to DNS entries for services exposed on the Edge Gateways, ensuring that clients receive the IP addresses of operational Edge Gateways in response to their DNS queries. Tetrate's solution has access to private domains with private IPs, and maintains resilience against regional outages, including functional but isolated regions (split brain) and other disruptions like cluster faults and failed deployments.

Tetrate's solution is specifically designed to address the challenges of failover for private cloud and datacenter services in large-scale environments where health-checks and DNS updates may test internal rate limits and drive large volumes of traffic. Tetrate GLB provides a consistent solution in both Azure and AWS, thus reducing operating costs.

Unlike hosted DNS-based Global Server Load Balancer (GSLB) solutions, Tetrate Global Load Balancer:

  • Runs within the cloud infrastructure, managing traffic to internal, private addresses which cannot be observed by external GSLB solutions and using the provider's native DNS solution (Azure Private DNS, AWS Route 53 Private DNS)
  • Performs health checks and managed failover by monitoring the performance and availability of the edge gateways in the hosted K8s clusters, not by sending synthetic test requests to every endpoint and for every managed DNS name
  • Efficiently handles DNS updates so as to not overwhelm cloud-provider rate limits (Azure, AWS Route 53)
  • Is deployed and managed by the user, with rich logging and metrics which enable effective monitoring and troubleshooting
